Why the Algarve is a Popular Destination

Coffee Tourism DestinationsTourism in the Algarve really kicked off much after the fall of the dictatorial Estado Novo regime in 1974. And suddenly the world discovered wonderful sandy beaches, hidden coves and a mild weather. Over the years, the Algarve has emerged as Portugal’s biggest tourist attraction, drawing Europeans to its white washed villages and spectacular beaches.

While not as over developed as some of Europe’s other beach destinations like the Costa del Sol, the Algarve has also seen some less than tasteful holiday resorts come up along its lovely coast. Yet, it somehow manages to retain its quaint charm and life for those living in villages off the coast goes on more or less at the same pace as it did years ago, or so it seems.

The Algarve, located in the southernmost part of Portugal, occupies a small area but is studded with countless beaches of unparalleled beauty. The crystal waters of the Atlantic only add to their allure. Some of the most popular beaches like Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, Meia Praia and Ponta da Piedade are located around Lagos. The best way to explore the Algarve is to hire a car and look for isolated coves, of which there are many, not overrun by tourists.
